Community Doulas

Working with new mothers to improve infant health and social support.

COMMUNITY DOULAS

Our early childhood strategy begins before childbirth, with the SBCC Community Doula Program. This program provides emotional and social support to women who are often socially isolated and disconnected from support resources, assisting them through pregnancy, delivery and early infancy with nutrition education, basic needs support, medical systems advocacy, labor and delivery coaching, breastfeeding education and facilitation, and mother-child activities promoting attachment and bonding. The relationship between mother and doula serves as the gateway to a broad range of other community relationships: with other parents and caregivers, with child development and health organizations and institutions, and with preschools and schools. All new mothers in the program have the opportunity to enter SBCC's Preschool Without Walls program.
